Update Everywhere

Changed your name, title or gender marker in the UK? This is the list of everywhere to update it, in a sensible order, with the documents each one actually asks for. Your progress and notes stay on this device only: nothing is sent anywhere.

Some processes differ by nation (student finance, NHS records, driving licence body).

Gym, vet, a club, the dentist that is not on the list. Added items are saved with everything else.

About this list

Built from GOV.UK, DBS, NHS and TransActual's updating your details guide, which is the most complete written source and worth reading in full. Every item links to an official or well-maintained page: rules and fees change, so check the link before you send anything. This is not legal advice.

Three things people wish they had known first: an enrolled deed poll is published in The Gazette and becomes a public record, and is almost never needed. Get photo ID (passport or driving licence) in your new name early, because banks and others ask for it. And if you will ever need a DBS check, contact the DBS sensitive applications team before the check is requested so your previous name never appears on the certificate.
